Twaayf Foundation History

As the first blog we would like to write a little bit of history and the development of the TWAAYF foundation. The aim of the blog is to simply update supporters of TWAAYF, to let them know current news and further developments surrounding the Madaraka school, TWAAYF centre and Likoni community.

In 2006 Martin Gitonga and Dennis Mugo founded Total War Against Aids Youth Foundation to assist orphaned and abandoned children. The two brothers grew up as street boys, knowing first hand the hardships of homelessness, drug abuse and lack of access to education. They chose to help other children avoid the streets and to give them the chance of a brighter future. The Children's Centre is home to 20 abandoned or orphaned children and provides those children with their basic needs, a loving and nurturing environment as well as education. Twaayf’s philosophy is to insure that each child has the opportunity to develop into an independent and successful adult. We believe that youths and children are essential agents and creators of change for the good of all in society.
Madaraka Community School was founded in 2007 by Total War Against AIDS Youth Foundation as a means of providing education for TWAAYF children and other vulnerable young people in Likoni. Our School provides early childhood education to children in Likoni regardless of their ability to pay fees. Our pupils are receiving free education and two meals a day for which the parents pay a small amount to support the school expenses ($3 per month/ 10 cents per day). Through this program wish to generate equality between the children in our society and give children from poor backgrounds the opportunity to cornerstone education and to live responsible, free from poverty sustained lives.
With help of five volunteer teachers the school began offering early childhood education to 40 students in 2007. Today 170 students learn at Madaraka through an innovative curriculum which uses music, arts and creative to teach Kiswahili, English, science and Math.

Twaayf Foundation is a youth organization, which aims to assist vulnerable and impoverished young people in the Likoni community. In an effort to empower youth and encourage clean living, there is a strong emphasis on the performing arts. Many of our members and TWAAYF children perform theatre skits as well as sing a part of our Holy Kraft music Entertainment group.

Holy Kraft works to endorse positive living amongst youth in Likoni and beyond. Furthermore, Twaayf Foundation also encourages the children of TWAAYF children’s centre to perform, promoting confidence and skills among vulnerable children.
The Twaayf foundation is an organization that seeks to educate, house and care for the underprivileged youth.

Events
Twaayf Foundation regularly hosts community outreach events, including music concerts, talent shows, sporting tournaments, and service projects for Likoni youth. Our events target youth both in and out of school to counteract the consequences of idleness, help youth realize their potential and encourage them to make positive choices in order to achieve their life goals. Through having peer education lessons at our events and organizing games for children and youths we aim to generate awareness in an easy way.
